Your Next Wall Weighs 800kg: Engineering Floor-Standing Screen Aquariums as Room Dividers

Of everything we ship, the scariest is not the 500-gallon monster in the crate next to it. It is the slim one. A floor-standing screen aquarium stands 150cm tall and maybe 30cm wide, holding up to 800kg of water, parked in the middle of a living room where people walk past it daily, children bump into it, and the cleaning crew works around it. From the workshop floor, that is not a fish tank anymore. That is a piece of furniture with a structural job — and furniture does not get to leak.

The tall, thin problem: lateral stability

A screen aquarium has the worst proportions a structure can have: very tall, very narrow, very heavy on top. Push it sideways and it wants to tip. That is not a theoretical worry — it is the single most important engineering decision in the whole product, and it happens before a single panel of glass is cut.

The answer is not to add weight for the sake of it. The answer is where the weight sits. Our screen models ride on a weighted steel base with an internal 304 stainless steel skeleton, which keeps the center of gravity as low as the floor will allow. Think of it like a wine glass: a tall glass with a heavy, wide foot feels planted no matter how much you swirl it. A tall glass on a narrow stem tips on the first nudge. Same glass, same water — different base, different physics.

For the same reason, we never build these cabinets hollow. The filtration, the plumbing, the steel — all of it lives low, in the base, where it does double duty as ballast.

Notice that the slimmest option — 30cm — is the one that divides a dining area from a lounge. Slimness is the whole point there: the thinner the tank, the less it reads as a "block" in the room, and the more it reads as moving light. We use ultra-white glass on all of these for exactly that reason.

The furniture-grade requirements nobody sees

A wall has no plumbing, no maintenance, no noise. The moment you replace a wall with an aquarium, all three become your problem. Here is how we handle them in the factory:

Hidden plumbing. Every pipe runs inside the tank's internal weir — the overflow column is built into the glass structure, so from any angle in the room, you see water, fish, and nothing else. No hoses, no bulkheads, no evidence that a machine is involved.

Dual-sided finishing. A partition has no back. The cabinet doors and filtration access have to look finished from both sides, because both sides are somebody's living room. We treat the "rear" of these tanks with the same edge work and panel alignment as the front. Half-finished backs are for tanks against walls. These are not.

Silent flow. A divider tank sits next to sofas, dining tables, desks. Gurgling overflow pipes are not acceptable at conversation distance. We use a pipe-free, siphon-break overflow design that moves water without the plumbing noises that cheap dividers broadcast into the room 24 hours a day.

Before installation: three numbers to get right

Floor load bearing. A localized load of up to 500kg/m² is a real number, and it lands on a footprint the size of a doormat. Tiled and hardwood floors are usually fine — but "usually" is why we ask customers to confirm the floor structure before we ship. A tank this heavy should never be the first test of a floor's honesty.

Power access. The recessed floor outlet should sit directly under the center of the cabinet. It sounds like a detail. It is the difference between a clean silhouette and a power cord crossing the room like a tripwire. We mark the outlet position on every installation drawing.

Maintenance clearance. Above the tank, plan at least 60cm of working space for cleaning and aquascaping. In high-end interiors this space hides behind a decorative ceiling soffit, so the room looks finished and the fish still get their weekly service.

The day we install one

I stood in a customer's living room once, watching our crew level the base of an 800kg screen aquarium. Leveling took forty minutes — shims in, water level out, shims out, repeat — because every millimeter of lean shows up in the waterline, and a visible waterline is the one thing ultra-white glass cannot hide.

When they finished, the customer walked to the dining side and just looked. No fish yet, just water and light moving through a 30cm slice of room. He said nothing for a long moment. Then: "It's not a wall."

"No," I said. "Walls don't do that."
