The response gap: timers vs. real-time
Half of the "smart" tanks on the market are actually timed tanks. They switch lights and feeders on a schedule, and that is the whole feature list. They cannot detect a dropping water level, a temperature spike, or a pump that died at 3 a.m. — which is exactly when those things happen, and exactly when the owner is asleep.
A real IoT system closes that gap. Hydrostatic sensors, temperature probes, and moisture detectors feed a unified cloud interface. The pump stops drawing current, the leak probe at the cabinet base gets wet, the temperature drifts past its window — and the notification is on your phone before the system is compromised. The owner's absence is no longer the system's weakness. It is the exact condition the system was built for.
Lighting and flow: precision, not presets

Spectrum and PAR control. Programmable sunrise and sunset cycles prevent the light shock that snaps a sensitive Arowana out of its day. And precise PAR adjustment lets the owner tune light intensity to control algae — not by guesswork, by numbers.

Auto top-off. Evaporation is a constant in a large tank. An optical-sensor ATO holds the water level and salinity steady, and it protects the return pump from the one failure it cannot survive: running dry.

Mechanical override. If the Wi-Fi or the app fails, physical override switches must keep life support running. The smart system is allowed to lose its connection; it is not allowed to lose the pumps. When the network is down, the last line of defense is a switch your finger can find in the dark.
Industrial-grade sensors with app calibration. pH and temperature probes should be high-accuracy industrial grade, and the manufacturer should provide an app-based calibration routine. A cheap probe is not a sensor; it is a rumor about the water.
Splash-proof control enclosure, IP65+. The control modules must live in a splash-proof housing, separate from the main sump area. Electronics and humidity share this cabinet for years; the enclosure is the only thing between them. Corrosion is the slow death of smart systems — slow, invisible, and entirely preventable.
