The easiest part of an OEM project is the drawing. A distributor emails us a render of a cabinet tank — beautiful, modern, exactly what their market wants — and asks, "Can you build this?" The answer is always yes. The harder question is what the drawing does not show: the pump brand, the silicone cure time, the glass source, the voltage, the moisture rating of the cabinet board. That invisible half of the product is the technical scope, and it is the part that decides whether the distributor's brand survives year three. This guide is the scoping conversation we have with every serious OEM partner — in four steps.
Step 1: Scope the application, not the shape
The tank has to survive its room before it can impress it.
Commercial and high-traffic — screen series (SKU 717/731). These stand in open space, carrying 500kg+ of water in a divider that people walk past all day. They need lateral stability engineering and hidden plumbing — and an internal 304 stainless steel skeleton, because a divider cabinet that bows under its own load will transfer that stress straight into the glass.
Residential and executive — cabinet series (SKU 710/722). The owner's time is the budget. High-volume sump filtration keeps these stable for 3-6 months without manual intervention. A tank that needs weekly attention is not a luxury product; it is a part-time job with a nice view.
Same factory, different engineering. The application decides the build, not the other way around.
Step 2: Define the life support ratios
The filtration system is the largest factor in your after-sales support load — and after-sales calls are where margins die. Mandate these ratios in writing:
Bio-media volume ≥ 10% of total tank volume. This is the floor for biological stability. Below it, the nitrogen cycle runs out of surface area exactly when the tank is stocked at full capacity.
Dry-wet separation trays. Mechanical waste comes out of the water column before it breaks down into ammonia. This is not a filter preference; it is a maintenance budget decision for your customer's team.
Turnover of 6x to 10x per hour. For Arowana tanks in the SKU 722 series, we hold the line at 10x — predatory fish produce a bioload that makes 6x look generous on paper and inadequate in the water.
Step 3: Lock the materials to the brand
In the luxury segment, a material failure is a brand-killer, and the brand on the tank is yours.
Every row in this table is a row your competitor may be skipping. The particle board cabinet that swells in year two, the acidic silicone that lets go in year three, the thin iron frame that corrodes invisibly — none of it shows in the catalog photo. All of it shows up in the review section.
Step 4: Engineer the supply chain
The product is only as good as its arrival condition and its plug.
Electrical configuration. Every OEM system gets configured for the destination: 110V/60Hz for USA and Japan, 220V/50Hz for EU and UK, with localized plug types and CE/UKCA/RoHS certified components. A tank that needs an adapter is a tank that was not scoped.
Logistics engineering. ISPM-15 compliant plywood crates with 50mm-80mm EPE foam suspension, holding the international breakage rate under 0.5%. Your inventory investment travels in that crate; the crate is part of the product.
Before you sign: three verifications
A 100% BOM, line by line. Pump brands, LED PAR values, silicone curing times — on paper. "Generic" components are not a cost saving; they are a field failure scheduled in advance.
Private labeling done properly. Laser-etched logos in the glass, metal badges on the cabinet. Your brand should be built into the product, not stuck on with adhesive. If it can peel off, it is not a brand identity; it is a sticker.
A 3% spare parts allocation. Impellers, O-rings, LED drivers, packed in every container. When a customer's pump fails in month seven, the distributor who can fix it in a week keeps the account. The one who orders from China loses it.
The shelf with the lesson on it
In every market we supply, there is a version of this story: a distributor's branded tank that looked great in the catalog and failed in the field — swollen cabinet doors, green-tinted glass, a pump that died in month seven. The brand took the blame, because the brand was on the front.
That is the asymmetry of OEM: the factory's name is nowhere on the product, and the distributor's name is everywhere on it. Every spec in this article exists to protect the name on the front from the parts nobody sees. Scope it right on paper, and the tank will defend your brand in the field for a decade. Scope it loosely, and the field will do the explaining instead.
