The 290°C Insurance Policy: Heat-Soaking Jinjing Ultra-Clear Glass for Luxury Aquariums

From the workshop floor of the Ruibit Aquarium factory, Foshan — where the furnace and the cutting table share one wall

Fifteen years ago, a sheet of tempered glass exploded in our warehouse at two in the morning. Nobody touched it. No forklift was near it. The security camera caught it: the panel simply detonated where it stood, leaving a pile of gravel on the floor. We watched the tape a dozen times. The glass gave up on its own.

That event is why this article exists, and why every piece of ultra-clear glass in our factory earns its place through a furnace before it ever touches a tank.

The invisible defect: nickel sulfide

Spontaneous breakage is caused by nickel sulfide inclusions — microscopic impurities trapped inside the glass during manufacturing. Tempering makes glass strong, but it also locks those inclusions under tension. Months or years later, one of them can change phase, expand, and turn a perfect panel into sand. It is rare. It is also the kind of rare you do not want happening above a marble floor or in a hotel lobby.

You cannot see these inclusions. You cannot X-ray them out. The only reliable way to deal with them is to provoke them — in a controlled environment, on our schedule, not yours.

The heat soak test: 290°C of honesty

This is where the heat soak test (HST) comes in. Every ultra-clear panel we use is loaded into a furnace and held at 290°C for several hours. The heat forces any latent nickel sulfide inclusion to expand now, while the panel is still in our building. If a sheet is going to fail, it fails in the furnace, where the cost is a broken panel and not a flooded room.

Since we made HST mandatory on every panel, the self-explosion rate in our shipped tanks has dropped to effectively zero. I do not mean "statistically negligible." I mean we cannot remember the last one. That is the entire point of the test: it moves the failure from the client's site to our factory floor, where failure is cheap and anonymous.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the wall: the glass itself

Once the furnace has signed off on a panel, the real question becomes what you can see through it. And here is where the aquarium industry does its best impersonation of a used car lot, because every sheet of glass on the market claims to be "clear."

Standard float glass is honest about what it is: it carries over 1,000 ppm of iron, and at 15mm or 19mm thickness it turns a heavy green. Fish, plants, corals — everything behind it looks dulled, like the color was turned down.

Jinjing G-Crystal ultra-clear glass drops the iron below 120 ppm and reaches 91.5% light transmission at 15mm. The practical effect: even at 25mm thick — the sort of armor a 1.5-meter-tall display needs — the glass stays virtually invisible. You are not looking at a window. You are looking at nothing.

The middle row is the trap. "Premium low-iron" at 200 ppm looks fine in a small tank and falls apart in a large one, where every extra millimeter of glass amplifies the tint. That is why we spec the raw material, not the marketing name.

What we demand from our glass supplier

CNC diamond-grade edge polishing. Rough edges scatter light; polished edges let it pass and glow at the seams. Every panel gets the full pass before assembly.

EN 12150-1 thermal toughening. Fragmentation and impact resistance are tested to a documented European standard, not to a verbal assurance.

Batch certificates for raw iron content. We ask for the iron oxide levels on the actual plate, per batch. If the paperwork is missing, the glass is not coming into our cutting room — there is too much at stake to take a supplier's word for it.

Three things to check before you sign

  • UV filtering for sunlit rooms. If the aquarium faces direct sunlight, ask whether an additional UV-blocking layer is available. It prevents algae blooms without sacrificing clarity.
  • Lamination above 1.2m height. Tanks taller than 1.2 meters should use SGP or PVB interlayers for multi-layer safety glass. That is not an upgrade; at that height it is the specification.
  • Step alignment at the corners. Bonded corners should show no "step" between panels. A deviation above 0.5mm means the CNC calibration was off, and it will show up in every seam of the finished tank.

The paperwork that follows every tank

Before anything ships, two documents land on my desk: the measured light transmission of the actual panels, and the heat-soak log showing every sheet's time in the furnace. No log, no signature, no shipment. That rule has held since my first year on the floor, and it is why I can stand in a customer's living room, look through 25mm of glass at a fish that appears to be floating in air, and sleep perfectly well that night.
