Abstract

Most strange things in a shrimp tank are not diagnosed by name first. They are diagnosed by location, shape, movement, risk, and shrimp behavior . A white worm on the glass, green fuzz under a shrimp, tiny white dots in the water, and a white ring around the body all point to different problems. Some are harmless microfauna. Some are parasites or infections. Some are water-parameter warnings.

The safest rule is simple: identify before treating. Take a clear photo or video under white light, check whether the organism is on shrimp, glass, plants, substrate, or dead tissue, then test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, GH, KH, and TDS if shrimp are stressed or dying.

A shrimp keeper once sent a blurry video and asked, “Is my whole tank infected?” The tank showed white dots on glass, a dead shrimp, and one shrimp with a pale mark near the head.

The answer was not one disease. It was a diagnosis path.

Start With Location

If it is on glass, plants, or hardscape, think hydra, planaria, biofilm, copepods, seed shrimp, or detritus worms.

If it is attached to a live shrimp, look more carefully. White hairs near the head may suggest Scutariella. White fuzz on the body may suggest vorticella-like growth. Green stringy growth under the belly may be Clado, not eggs.

If it is on a dead shrimp, remove the body first. Growth after death may be decomposition, not the cause of death.

Quick Identification Rules

Hydra attach to surfaces and extend tiny tentacles. They may threaten baby shrimp.

Planaria glide on glass or substrate and often have a flat body with a triangular head. Detritus worms are thin, thread-like, and wiggle.

Copepods move in quick jerks. Seed shrimp look like tiny oval moving dots. These are usually harmless and often increase after overfeeding.

Biofilm on new wood is often normal. White fuzz on leftover food is decay and should be removed.

Green fuzzy material under a shrimp may be Clado if it looks like algae strands. Neat round beads under the belly are more likely eggs.

Do not medicate from one blurry photo. Reduce feeding, remove uneaten food, siphon debris, and observe shrimp behavior.

Test water if shrimp are hiding, twitching, failing molts, or dying. Ammonia and nitrite should be 0 ppm . For shrimp tanks, unstable GH, KH, or TDS can be just as important as visible pests.

Isolate affected shrimp when growth is attached to the body, head, gills, or underside. Remove suspicious molts during parasite issues.
