Packing Glass Is Like Packing a Bomb: Export Crating Standards for Aquariums

From the packing bay of the Ruibit Aquarium factory, Foshan — where the tanks meet their hardest test

Here is a sentence I have said to more visitors than I can count: packing a large glass aquarium for export is like packing a bomb. Not because it is dangerous — because it has exactly one job, and that job must survive every person, machine, and ocean between our loading dock and your customer's front door. A crane operator in Rotterdam, a forklift driver in Los Angeles, a container stacked four high in a storm — any one of them can undo a month of our work in two seconds. So we build the packaging the way we build the tanks: as if the worst day is coming.

Why "standard packaging" fails at sea

A thin cardboard box or light wooden slats might survive a domestic courier. On a container ship, they meet a world that was not designed to be gentle: side impacts from adjacent crates, the full weight of stacked containers above, the jolt of a crane grabbing a poorly balanced load. That is how tanks arrive with corner cracks and shattered panes — not because they were dropped once, but because nothing between them and the world absorbed anything.

Our export crates are built from 12mm to 15mm fumigation-free plywood on a reinforced base pallet, with forklift access from all four sides. That last part matters more than it sounds: a pallet the forklift can grab from any direction is a pallet that does not get tilted, dragged, or dropped during port transfers. Most handling damage in shipping is not impact. It is bad ergonomics, corrected by the pallet.

The 3-layer suspension system

A strong box is only half the job. The other half is how the glass floats inside it. If the tank touches the crate, the crate becomes a speaker for every vibration of the voyage. So the tank must not touch the crate.

Layer 1 — stretch film. Wrapped directly on the glass to prevent scratches and keep moisture off the surface.

Layer 2 — 50mm of high-density EPE foam on all six sides. This is the shock absorber. It converts the kinetic energy of a drop or a vibration into slow compression instead of a hard impact on the glass. We treat the 50mm as a minimum, and the big tanks get more.

Layer 3 — the rigid plywood shell with steel corner reinforcements. The shell resists crushing; the steel corners take the hits that would otherwise land on the glass corners — the most vulnerable part of any tank.

Floated, not boxed. That is the whole design.

Three details that save shipments

ISPM-15 compliant materials. All wood is fumigation-free or heat-treated. Why does this matter to you? Because untreated wood gets your container stopped at customs — and a week of customs delay costs more than the packaging ever will. Compliance is not paperwork; it is schedule.

Corner edge guards. Heavy-duty plastic or cardboard guards inside the foam layers, at the corners. Glass fails at corners first, always. The guards make sure the first contact is with plastic, not with plywood.

Desiccant packs. Forty days at sea, through the tropics, with metal cabinet parts sealed in a box — that is a recipe for mold and corrosion. Large-scale desiccants inside the crate keep the interior dry enough that the tank looks the way it did on the packing bench.

What to check when the crate arrives

Tip-N-Tell indicators. If the crate carries tilt indicators, check them before signing. A sensor that has tripped beyond 60 degrees tells you the crate was laid on its side somewhere — and that information is worth having before you open anything.

External inspection. Walk around the crate first. Puncture marks and collapsed corners are the shipping company's report card. If the crate looks damaged, photograph it before opening — that photo is your evidence, and evidence is what claims are made of.

The uncrating protocol. Use a crowbar or an electric drill, never a hammer. A hammer sends a shockwave straight into the glass. The tank survived an ocean; do not defeat the packaging with a hammer in the last five minutes.

The note inside the lid

The last thing our packing crew does before sealing a crate is tape a note to the inside of the lid. It says, in English and Chinese: "Glass inside. Open like it is your own."

We do not write that for the customs officers. We write it for the last person who will touch the crate before it reaches you — the one holding the crowbar. If they take one extra minute because of that note, the entire packaging system has done its job. The tank inside was engineered to survive the ocean. The only thing left is for the last five minutes to go as well as the first five hundred hours.
