Open the cabinet under a large aquarium and a sump can look intimidating.
There is a return pump, filter media, protein skimmer, pipes, valves, sensors and perhaps an automatic top-off system. For a new aquarium owner, it can resemble a small water-treatment plant.
But a well-designed sump should not create more work.
It should make aquarium maintenance easier to see, organize and control.
The key is knowing what actually needs attention every day.
1. Look at the Water Level Before You Touch Anything
The return chamber is one of the first places we check.
Evaporation removes freshwater from the system, causing the return-section water level to fall. If it becomes too low, the pump may begin drawing air, producing bubbles and noise.
An automatic top-off system can solve much of this problem, but don't stop looking at the sump just because automation is installed.
Sensors can become dirty. Reservoirs can run empty.
Automation reduces daily work. It does not eliminate inspection.
2. Listen to the Aquarium
You can often hear a sump problem before you can see it.
A new gurgling sound may indicate air entering the drain. A pump that suddenly becomes louder may be drawing air or collecting debris. Splashing can indicate a changed water level or drainage condition.

3. Check Mechanical Filtration
Filter socks, filter wool and other mechanical media collect uneaten food, fish waste and suspended debris.

If mechanical media becomes heavily clogged, water flow can decrease or bypass the intended filtration path.
Inspect it regularly and clean or replace it when necessary.
Biological media is different.
It supports nitrifying bacteria, so avoid aggressively washing or replacing all mature biological media at once.
4. Look for Salt Creep, Leaks and Blockages
A few drops of water are easy to ignore inside a cabinet.
Don't.
Check pipe joints, valves, pump connections and the area around the sump for unusual moisture. In marine systems, salt deposits around a fitting can sometimes reveal a slow leak before water becomes obvious.
Also check that nothing is blocking the overflow or pump intake.
A two-minute inspection can prevent a much longer cleanup.
5. Don't Turn Daily Maintenance Into Daily Adjustment
This may be the most useful rule.
If the sump is operating normally, resist the urge to constantly adjust valves, pump speed, water level or equipment settings.
