From the cutting room of the Ruibit Aquarium factory, Foshan — where every panel gets the edge test before it becomes a tank
Every morning, before the first sheet touches the cutting table, I do the same thing. I pull two offcuts off the glass rack and hold them up to the workshop lights, side by side, and study the edges. One piece is standard float glass — the color of a beer bottle. The other is Jinjing G-Crystal ultra-white — pale, almost colorless, with a faint blue glint. Two seconds, no instruments, and I already know which one is going into a customer's display tank.
That edge test is the whole point of this article. The glass you look through decides how your aquarium looks for the next twenty years, and most buyers never look at the edge until the tank is already in the living room.
The green edge is a physics problem, not a color problem
Standard float glass carries iron oxide — usually above 1,000 ppm. Iron is a light thief. It does not steal evenly, either: it eats the reds and blues first, which is exactly the part of the spectrum that makes fish and plants look alive. Look at a fish through green glass and it turns muddy and dull. It is not the fish, and it is not the lighting. It is the iron between you and the water.
At the thickness a large tank needs, this stops being subtle. Hold up a 19mm piece of standard float and the room behind it looks dim, like looking through sunglasses with a green filter. Meanwhile the same thickness of low-iron glass is barely there. That difference is the entire reason luxury interiors, room dividers, and high-end display tanks are built on ultra-white glass.
91.5%: the number we argue about at the cutting table
Low-iron glass pushes the iron content below 120 ppm. Jinjing G-Crystal — the material we build our display tanks from — reaches a 91.5% light transmission rate at typical aquarium thicknesses. Standard float sits at 82-85%. That six to nine percent gap does not sound dramatic on paper. In a dimly lit living room, with a planted tank behind 19mm of glass, it is the difference between a centerpiece and a disappointment.
Transmission numbers also drift with thickness, which is why we always spec the glass against the actual panel size, not against a brochure. A 12mm showcase tank and a 25mm monster display are different optical problems, even if they share the same material.
The lens effect hides in the corners
Glass does more than transmit light — it bends it. Every pane has a refractive index, and a consistent index means the whole panel behaves the same way. Cheap glass varies slightly across the sheet, and in a large tank that variance collects at the corners, where panels meet at angles. You see it as a "lens effect": fish distorted or doubled when viewed from a steep angle, exactly the angle people use when the tank is a room divider or a screen aquarium (SKU 731/717).
Ultra-white glass is more consistent across the panel, which is why steep-angle viewing stays clean. If you are building a partition aquarium that people will walk past at an angle, this matters more than any other spec on the sheet.
The optical comparison, in one table
Three checks so "ultra-white" is actually ultra-white
Anyone can print "low-iron" on an invoice. Here is what we do in the factory so the claim survives contact with a real tank:
1. Diamond-grade edge polishing. We run every edge through CNC polishing. The edges of a glass panel are where light gets in — rough edges scatter it, polished edges let it pass and glow at the seams. That clean, bright seam line you see on high-end tanks is not decoration. It is the edge doing its job.
2. Heat-soak testing (HST). This is the one nobody talks about, and the one we never skip. Every so often, a glass panel contains a microscopic nickel sulfide inclusion. It can sit there for months or years, then suddenly expand and shatter the panel — no impact, no warning. We heat-soak every ultra-white panel in the factory to force any such inclusion to fail here, in the oven, instead of in someone's hotel lobby three years from now.
3. The paper trail. We ask our glass supplier for the raw material origin certificate on every batch. Genuine Jinjing G-Crystal has a documented source. A "lower-tier low-iron substitute" usually does not. If a supplier cannot show you the certificate, assume the glass is not what the label says.
Before you sign: three things to confirm
- Thickness consistency within ±0.2mm. We measure every panel; a sheet that varies in thickness shows up as "waves" in the surface when the tank is full. Fine in a shower door, unacceptable in a display tank.
- Nano coating for high-traffic spots. If the tank lives in a hallway or an office where people touch it, ask about anti-fingerprint nano coating. It keeps the optics clean without a daily glass wipe.
- Clear silicone with ultra-white glass. Pair white glass with clear structural silicone. Black or grey sealant anchors the eye to every seam; clear silicone lets the glass disappear, which is the whole point of buying ultra-white in the first place.
Do the test yourself
Next time you visit a showroom, do what I do at the start of every shift. Ask for two offcuts — one standard float, one ultra-white — hold them up to the light, and look at the edges. One look will tell you more than any spec sheet. It is the same test we have run every working morning for fifteen years, and it has never once lied to me.
