This morning, the water looks like someone poured a glass of milk into it.
The first reaction is usually to change the water, clean the filter or add a “water clarifier.”
Sometimes that works.
Sometimes it makes the problem worse.
Cloudy water is not a diagnosis. It is evidence. The first job is to find out what the aquarium is trying to tell you.
1. White or Milky Water: Check the Biology First
A white haze in a newly established aquarium is often associated with a bacterial bloom.
This can happen while the biological system is still developing, or after something suddenly increases the organic load: overfeeding, adding many fish, dead livestock or aggressive filter cleaning.
Before reaching for chemicals, test ammonia and nitrite .
If either is elevated, the cloudy appearance is no longer the main problem. Protecting the fish and restoring biological stability comes first.
Clear water can wait.
2. Floating Particles: Look at Mechanical Filtration
Sometimes the water is not truly cloudy. It contains thousands of tiny suspended particles.
Fish waste, uneaten food, sand dust and organic debris may remain in circulation when mechanical filtration is insufficient or water bypasses the filter media.

If the aquarium has a green tint, suspended algae may be responsible.
Now look beyond the filter.
How long are the lights running?
Does direct sunlight reach the aquarium?
Is nitrate or phosphate accumulating?
Has feeding increased?
Algae problems are often treated as something that needs to be killed. A better question is what is feeding the algae in the first place.
Light provides the opportunity. Nutrients provide the fuel.
4. Don't Forget Flow
A powerful pump does not guarantee good circulation.
Dead zones behind decorations, rocks or inside poorly arranged filtration chambers can allow debris to settle and decompose.
This becomes especially important in large aquariums.

5. Don't Fix Cloudy Water by Cleaning Everything
This is the mistake worth avoiding.
Cloudy water appears, so the owner changes most of the water, scrubs the aquarium, replaces every filter material and adds chemicals — all on the same afternoon.
Now nobody knows what caused the problem, and biological stability may have been disturbed as well.
Instead, identify the type of cloudiness first.
White? Test the biology.
Dirty particles? Check mechanical filtration.
Green? Investigate light and nutrients.
