Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate: The Three Numbers That Decide Whether Your Fish Live

A new aquarium can look perfect and still be dangerous.

Clear water. New filter. Strong pump. Fish swimming normally.

Then, a few days later, they stop eating. One stays near the surface. Another breathes rapidly. By morning, a fish is dead.

The owner often suspects disease.

Sometimes the real problem is much simpler:

The tank has water, but it does not yet have a working biological filter.

To understand why, you need to know three numbers: ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.

1. Ammonia: The Waste You Cannot See

Fish continuously release ammonia through respiration and waste. Uneaten food and decaying organic matter add more.

In a mature aquarium, beneficial bacteria process it.

In a new or overloaded aquarium, ammonia can accumulate faster than bacteria can remove it.

That matters because ammonia is toxic. Fish may show rapid breathing, poor appetite, lethargy or unusual surface behavior.

The dangerous part?

The water can remain crystal clear.

Clear is an appearance, not a water-quality measurement.

2. Nitrite: The Middle Step Is Not Safe Either

The nitrogen cycle does not turn ammonia directly into harmless water.

One bacterial group converts:

Ammonia → Nitrite

Then another converts:

Nitrite → Nitrate

Nitrite is still dangerous because it interferes with the fish's ability to transport oxygen effectively.

So when ammonia finally reaches zero, don't automatically assume the aquarium is cycled.

If nitrite is still elevated, the biological system is still catching up.

3. Nitrate: The Number That Tells a Longer Story

Nitrate is the end product of the basic aquarium nitrogen cycle and is generally much less immediately toxic than ammonia or nitrite.

But that doesn't mean it should be ignored.

Nitrate gradually accumulates when fish are fed, waste is processed and nutrients remain in the system. High or continuously rising nitrate often tells us something about the aquarium's overall balance: stocking density, feeding, water changes and filtration capacity.

This is why we look at trends , not only one test result.

The Filter Is Alive

At Ruibit, when we design filtration for a large aquarium, we don't calculate only pump flow.

We also think about biological carrying capacity .

Bio-media provides surface area where nitrifying bacteria can establish. But adding a box full of ceramic media today does not mean you have a mature biological filter tomorrow.

The bacteria need time.

And they need oxygenated water flowing across that media.

This is also why suddenly replacing all mature filter media can create trouble. You may think you are cleaning the filter while actually throwing away a large part of the biological system.

Three Numbers, One System

For a stable aquarium, ammonia and nitrite should normally be kept at undetectable or effectively zero levels , while nitrate is managed according to the livestock and aquarium type.

But don't just memorize the numbers.

Understand what connects them:

Fish create waste. Bacteria process waste. Filtration gives those bacteria somewhere to live. Maintenance controls what remains.

An aquarium does not become safe when the water turns clear.

It becomes safe when the invisible biology behind that clear water is doing its job.

The glass holds the water. The bacteria keep the fish alive.
